OBITUARY

MR. S. F. TOLMIE CANADIAN STATESMAN (Received October 15, 5.5 p.m.) VICTORIA. Oct. 14 The death has occurred of Mr. S. F. Tolmie, formerly Premier. of British Columbia, aged 70. Mr. Simon Fraser Tolmie became Conservative Premier of British Columbia in August, 1928. He was a typical Western farmer. in Victoria, he was the son of one of the pioneer agriculturists of the Pacific Coast. Mr. Tohnie distinguished himself mainly for his sound personal knowledge of the farmer's problems. Sir Robert Borden took him into the Cabinet as Minister of Agriculture until his Government was defeated in 1921. Ho was again Minister of Agriculture in the short-lived Government of Mr. Meighen. He disliked the party aspect of politics and numbered his friends among both major parties.

MR. R. U. JOHNSON AMERICAN POET-DIPLOMAT. (Received October 15. 5.5 p.m.) NEW YORK. Oct. 14 The death is announced of Mr/ Robert Underwood Johnson, editor, poet and diplomat. Mr. Johnson was born at Washington on January 12, 1853. He joined the staff of the Century magazine in 1873 and was its editor 1909-13. He was United States Ambassador to Italy 1920-21. He wrote several books of poems.

MR. WILLIAM BROOKS CAREER IN AUSTRALIA SYDNEY. Oct. 15 The death is announced of Sir. William Brooks, a noted Sydney business man, head of a leading printing and stationery firm. He 'was chairman of the Australian Federal Capital League. His age was 78. Mr. Brooks uras born in Devon, England. He went to Australia in 1884. after spending several years in South Africa. He was president of the Employers' Federation of New South Wales for some years, and he had represented the Bourke Ward in the City Council. In the latter stages of the Great War he was Paper Comptroller for the Commonwealth. He had been a member of the Council of tin* Chamber of Manufactures and president of the Master Builders' Association. He was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Council, IUIS--34. . ....
