LITTLE PROGRESS
SHANGHAI FRONT COUNTRY A SEA OF MUD OPERATIONS HAMPERED By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright SHANGHAI, Oct. 13 'The Japanese offensive has not made much progress on the Shanghai front. The Chinese spokesman points out that though the war has lasted 28 days longer than that of 1932, the Japanese have not advanced anything like so far in Shanghai, nor are they able to consolidate their gains. . The country round Shanghai is a sea of mud and highly unfavourable for infantry operations. Whether tho progress of the Japanese has been interrupted by the adverse weather cannot be determined yet, but. it seems that the main southward thrust has not weakened the Chinese positions at Chapei and Kiangwan. During to-day's extensive bombing at Chapei a bomb fell on a house manned/ by British troops and stove in the roof. There Avere no casualties. A protest was promptly sent to the Japanese commander, who sent an officer to apologise.
