SHANGHAI HOSTILITIES STRONG COUNTER-ATTACKS' [by TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION] WELLINGTONS Thursday The Chinese Consul to-day received the following cablegram from Nanking: Several attempts by the Japanese to land more troops north-west of Liuho, Shanghai, were frustrated. Twenty Japanese warships and 17 transports arrived off the coast and bombarded the Chinese positions throughout the night before the infantry attempted to land. ' Chinese machine-gupners caught the Japanese wading knee-deep in water and played havoc with them. The fighting south of Wentsaopang was extremely severe last night and this morning, the Japanese throwing all their available forces against the Chinese line astride the LiuhangDazang highway. At an early stage the Japanese made slight headway but the Chinese troops launched a general countej-attack and drove the Japanese back to their original line. | CLOSER CONTACT CHINA AND RUSSIA SOVIET MILITARY STRENGTH r ■ ' [froh our own correspondent] SINGAPORE. Oct. 1 "China and Russia are coming into closer contact than ever before, owing to the recent Sino-Soviet non-aggres-sion pact," said Mr. Liu Shiak Chang, secretary of the Chinese Embassy in Moscow, when interviewed at Singapore. "Russia is now devoted to making herself strong, although she docs not seek war with other nations," he said. "Her forces include 6000 warplanes, and more than 500,000 regular troops. "In the event of mobilisation she will be able to present a front of between 2,000,000 and 3,000,000 men," WITHDRAWALS DENIED GERMANS AND ITALIANS BERLIN, Oct. 13 Japanese reports to the effect that Germans have been recalled from China aro officially denied. A message from Rome states that the report of the withdrawal of Italian volunteers helping China is described as untrue.
