KAMO COLLIERIES
CESSATION OF WORK CONCERN IN WHANGAREI f REQUESTS TO MINISTER f • [by telegraph—own correspondent] ' WHANGAREI,' Thursday Grave concern at'the interim injunction of the Supreme Court stopping further pumping at the Kamo collieries, and thus preventing further mining owing to the alleged danger of subsidence on the main northern railway line, was expressed at to-day's meeting of the Wbangarei Harbour Board. The chairman, Mr. J. A. Finlayson, said he had sent a telegram to Mr: J. G. Barclay, M.P. for Marsden, asking him to request the Minister of Mines, the Hon. P. C. Webb, to have the injunction withdrawn or, alternatively, to allow one pump to remain in the mine pending the decision of the Court, as the position was serious for the board and district.
Mr. 11. H. Allan said that it seemed peculiar that men from an opposition mine should be able to report adversely on the mine, and the Government should institute searching inquiries before the mine was stopped In answer to a question, Mr. W. M. Fraser, the engineer, said the board had a little coal on hand, but after that was used it would have to get it from Westport in order to maintain its plant. In reply to Mr. P. Gardner the engineer said that about 70 men bad been thrown out of work. The company last year paid out £33,000 for wages and material, and this year it was intended to enlarge the scope of operations. It was decided to telegraph-tho Minister of Mines strongly protesting at the mine being stopped and pointing out the loss to the district by the cessation of the industry.
