PAN AMERICAN AIRWAYS
FACILITIES IN FAR NORTH INSPECTION BY MR. GATTY [by telegraph—owx correspondent] RUSSELL. Wednesday Possible, sites for mooring seaplanes were inspected by Mr. Harold Gatty, representative of Pan American Airways, who was impressed with Matavrht Bay. Mr. Gatty discussed this bay with the harbourmaster and took out a licence. He also saw several sites for a radio station and is returning in 10 days' time with a radio expert for a further inspection of a hilltop at the east end of Long Beach. Mr. and Mrs. Gatty left oh their return to Auckland this afternoon, via the Waipoua Forest. They will stay at Dargaville overnight and arrive at Auckland on Thursday morning.
Matawhi Bay is five minutes' walk from the Russell Wharf and is surrounded by hills that shelter it from the westerly winds, which made a Russell mooring out of the question. The proposed position for a radio station is in .sight of the bay and also in full view of the open sea.
