If) The quarterly return of the RegistrarGeneral for England and Wales shows that there were 6215 more births in the second quarter of this year than in the corresponding quarter of 1936. The total was 163,867 and the birth rate was 16.1 per 1000 of the estimated mid-year population. Of the infants born 84,023 were males and 79,844 females. Fewer infants under one year of age died, the mortality rate being 54 per 1000 births. The natural increase in the population by the excess of births over deaths was 45,343. The highest total in the corresponding quarters of the three preceding years was 38,112 in 1935.
