JAPAN AND PACIFIC
EXPANSION PROGRAMME TASK OF THE NAVY EYES ON THE DOMINIONS TOKIO, Sept. 19 Til a broadcast address on the Pacific question and the Japanese Navy's role, Naval Commander TJmezaki alluded to the sparsely populated state of Australia, New Zealand and Canada. The speaker said that Japan's constantly increasing population quite naturally and ever more strongly was being expanded overseas by migration. Commercially and industrially also slie was expanding, as were her fisheries. It was the Navy's duty to guard this expansion, particularly Japan's vital interests in the Western Pacific.
Considering the European situation, Britain was reasonably expanding her naval and air forces toward the Pacific and Australia. Nevertheless, Japan was keenly watching these activities. She was also watching American naval movements and preparation for an air line to New Zealand, and any movement made by the Soviet.
