Handicap impressively from a large field at Ashburton in June, is now on the front of the Improvers' Trot, limit 3.43, at New Brighton. The race of the same name and limit at the New Brighton February meeting was won by Gerfalcon, who is now on 36yds and likely to be the most dangerous of the backmarkers. Pilot Peter had a good record during the autumn, when lie won three times in short order, but lie may find it hard to reach the other two from 60yds behind. Lament, winner of the Yaldhurst Handicap at Addington in June from 3.30, and third on the last day of the August meeting at Addington, is regarded as a likely sort for the Spring Handicap, two miles. He is up against trotters with good performances, but he is very solid and from 24yds behind his chance may be favoured. When Casanova won the Belgium Handicap at Addington last month he indicated that he was a solid pacer and ho did not lose any friends when beaten by "U. Scott in the Islington Handicap. Casanova and Blair Athol. who was third in both races mentioned above, are in the Pacific Handicap, two miles, on Saturday, when Blair Athol meets Casanova on 36yds better terms than in the Belgium Handicap and 12yds better than in the Islington Handicap. . There are 34 acceptors for the Belfast Handicap, and, with 19 of these on the limit, speculators may bo chary of selecting horses handicapped behind. However, there may bo a number who may make an exception in the case of Colonel Grattan, who is 12yds behind. His last win was in the Advance Haudicap, limit 3.34, at Oamaru in May, when he won from scratch in 3.26 1-5. At a subsequent start at Forbury Park he finished strongly to gain third in the Royal Handicap, won by Royal Silk. Francisco probably will bo firm favourite for the Seaview Handicap, for maiden three-year-olds, but there may also bo a good measure of support for Stamboul. In view of the fact that he was third in the August Handicap and second in the King George Handicap at Addington last month, Pot Luck may be the elect of the public for the Bui-wood Handicap on Saturday. However, Llewellyn's Pride and Gallant Knight, who are on the same mark, may give him strong opposition. VALUABLE PRIZE TROTTING DERBY OF 1939 The prize-money for the New Zealand Trotting Derby Stakes, 1939, nominations for which were taken last evening, has been increased to £1250. When the race was instituted in 1914 the stake was £250. The New Brighton Trotting Club was sponsor of the race until 1925, when it was taken over by the Metropolitan Trotting Club and the value of the stake was increased from £SOO to £750. The 1938 Derby was endowed with £IOOO and now a further increase of £250 will make it one of the most valuable-evonts in the Dominion.
