FORM AT EPSOM

SANDUSKY GOES WELL KEWPIE'S KING IMPROVED EFFORT BY GRATTAN GIRL BY ABAYDOS Although horses trained by C. H. Goodall did not score a win at Epsom last Saturday, they performed creditably lor four seconds. Kewpie's King, who displayed his best form to date, was runner-up in the two leading races, and tlib other place-getters were Worthy Song and Ranfurly Lass. In finishing second to Lady Fame in the August Handicap Kewpie's King gained his first placing at two miles, and in going 4,36 2-5 was only a fraction outsido his handicap. All going well, Kewpie's King should bo a good winner this season, as ho is a fine stayer. Ranfurly Lass made a determined effort to win the Orakei Handicap, but just as victory appeared likely Argolis finished with great dash to beat her at the end. Worthy Song is building up a record for consistency without managing to win. She has been placed five times and her second to Hori Bingen was a creditable effort. She is improving as a stayer and her turn should come. Colleen Murphy, who showed signs of regaining form at tho June meeting, ruined a good chance of being placed in the Introductory Handicap by a couple of breaks. Gay Sister Reappears Gay Sister, who had not raced ?'or some considerable time, made a good showing for most of the journey in the Onehunga Handicap, which was run at a fast pace. Gay Sister, who is by Nelson Derby from Bells o' Brass, should derive benefit from tho run. The same applies to her stable mate Imposter, who was not long in work before the meeting. Ann Pointer was well in the pjcture for a good part of tho Grey Lynn Handicap, but found the milo and a-half too far. By Rey do Oro from a Logan Pointer mare, Ann Pointer is bred on sound lines and may improve as a stayer with ago. In addition to his wins with Querida and Crocus, F. J. Smith gained minor placings with Sandusky, Grattan Girl and Nervie's Last. The last-named had two runs, and, after failing at two miles, finished well to secure third in the Massey Memorial Handicap, li miles and register 2.44 2-5, a fine effort. Although conceding several smart improvers 36 yards, Grattan Girl went a sound race to finish third in the Mount Eden Handicap, registering the creditable time of 2.51 4-5. It was Grattan Girl's fourth start for Smith, for whom she has recorded a win, a second and a third. Sho is a likely improver by Grattan Loyal from a Logan Pointer mare. Musketeer was solidly supported in the Orakei Handicap, but, although he recorded 3.25 1-5 off 3.32, could only got fourth. He was checked at a critical stage, otherwise ho might have been a little closer. King's Warrior Fails As a trial for his Wellington Stakes engagement at Hutt Park on September 11 Sandusky made a satisfactory showing in spito of his defeat by Crocus. Ho has furnished into a handsome three-year-old and should be all the better for his race. The future appears bright for Sandusky, whose next meeting with Twos Loose is eagerly awaited. Sandusky's admirers are sanguine that ho will acquit himself well. King's Warrior, whoso excellent form at Addington indicated that he would prove superior to those opposed to him in tho Massey Memorial Handicap, failed to run up to expectations. The non-appearance of Swordsmtfn in tho Royal Oak Handicap was duo to a misunderstanding at tho Village Farm stables, and when tho motor transport arrived at Epsom, the horso was not with his stable-mates. As a result, he had to be withdrawn. Swordsman arrived before tho race was run, but was too late.

Queenie Direct was turned out in excellent condition by S. M. August. She ran a fine raco for third behind Crocus and Sandusky in tho Grey Lynn Handicap. A course of strong unhopplcd work had effected some improvement in Queenie Direct, who may yet do a little better.

Top Hand had his first public outing in tlio Mount Eden Handicap, but he was badly drawn and was not prominent. He is a good-looking gelding' by Jack Potts from Alono, and should bo useful when more experienced. Munga Tangi Defeated

Spessiva showed a glimpse of form in iinishing third in the Orakei Handicap and she may fulfil some of her early promise this season. A three-year-old half-brother, by Ayrmont Chimes, to Spessiva. is being trained in the south by J. Bryco. So well was Munga Tangi working before the meeting that his admirers would not hear of defeat in the Onehunga Handicap, but although he recorded 3.25, ho could finish only fourth. He began well but lost his position early and was never afterwards dangerous. _

Having his . first race for L. N. Vernall, Blandford mado his best showing for some considerable time. He was responsible lor the fast pace set in the Onehunga Handicap, and although ho weakened near the end, battled on to get third in 3.24 2-5. Blandford may prove difficult to beat over a shorter cours£. The consistent Compass mado a bold bid for victory at the first time of asking in the 3.30 class, and when he took charge two furlongs from home, his chance looked very bright. However, ho was outstayed by Kewpie's Bond even though he displayed gameness and went 3.22. It only required a slight element of luck in the final stages of the Grey Lynn Handicap for Atarau King to have returned a place dividend, as after being disappointed when making a run at the bottom of the straight, lie finished very resolutely to get fourth. Ho is likely to be useful this season. RAGING FIXTURES Septombcr 2 —Egmont-Wanganui Hunt Club (at Now Plymouth)'. September 4—Taranalci Hunt Club. September 0, 11 —Wanganui Jockey Club.
