NEW KEEL YACHT

YOUNG MEN'S VENTURE BUILT IN SPARE TIME FEATURES OF THE CRAFT Two young .men, Messrs. D. T. H. Donovan and J. Dolores, started two years ago to build a keel yacht for their own use and their task is now nearly completed. The plans for the vessel were drawn by Mr. Donovan and after the keel had been laid and work on the stem and stern put in hand in a back garden in Carlton Gore Road, it was decided to dismantle the structure and make -a fresh start on the yacht in Newmarket. Since then the two young men have been working on their boat in their spare time and they hare now reached the stage where only the painting and the details have to be carried out before the vessel is ready to take the water.

Her principal dimensions are as follows: —Length overall, 37ft., waterline, 20ft., beam, lift., draught, oft. Gin. She has a semi-spoon bow and a counter stern with moderate overhangs. The vessel is diagonally built of kauri with three skins and pohutiikawa knees. Two 7ft. cabins, a galley and a large chain locker are provided. The headroom throughout is 6ft. The vessel will be fitted with a J.O-12 horse-power engine which will be installed at the entrance to the main cabin. A side propeller will be used. Two and a-half tons of lead will be moulded on the keel and the yacht will carry one and a-half tons of inside ballast. She will be ketch rigged and will carry the latest wishbone rig, being the first large yacht to be equipped with this rig in New Zealand. The mainsail will be 45ft. in length from the dock and the mizzen 34ft.. 6in. All the sail will be inboard. The total sail area will be 732 square feet, made up as follows: —Staysail, main staysail and mizzen, each 160 square feet; main trvsail, 252 square feet. The ketch, which will be known as the Fag-an-Belach, will be launched in November.
