STATE SCHEMES

NO LACK OF MONEY PRIME MINISTER'S VIEW "THERE FOR THE ASKING." [BV TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT | DUXEDIN. Tuesday Speaking at the formal inauguration of the Dunedin City Council's housing scheme at Clyde Hill, the Prime Minister, the lit. Hon. AI. J. Savage, made general reference to the activities of the State in the direction of housing and also touched on the proposal to construct a port at Jackson's Bay. Actually there was no reason why everything required for housing should not be produced in New Zealand — timber, stone, tiles, bathtubs and plumbing. Wherever possible the Government was using local materials. With theif own materials and their own men to do the work there remained only the money to be found. Mr. Savage stated that for years they seemed to have been suffering from some sort of bug which made them believe that there was no money for such purposes. It was all nonsense.

The money was there to be had for the asking and in future nothing was going to suffer for lack of money or be hold up because some people thought there was not enough. He was convinced that until they got out of the clutches of a money system that was not a true reflection of the ability of an individual to earn and prodrfce they would never escape from the wilderness in which the world was floundering to-day.

As far as New Zealand was concerned, they were working on a new policy and it was no longer necessary to wait for the money. He could assure them that, no matter what they read in the newspapers, there was nothing to worry about. Some people said the Government was heading for the precipice. but that was all wrong and the Government would very soon prove it.
