HARRIER RACING

JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP DECISIVE WIN FOR N. AMBLER The Auckland provincial junior cross-country champion, N. Ambler, of the Calliope Club, who easily retained his title in the 4J miles' race decided nt Birkenhead last Saturday, is one of the most promising long-distance runners Auckland lias produced. The fact that lie. outpaced a large field by a margin of over two minutes is evidence of his superiority over the younger harriers of Auckland and it is doubtful if there is a junior in the Dominion who could have defeated him on his performance on Saturday. Ambler covered the last portion of the race entirely unpaced and it is certain that, had he been challenged over the final stages, he would have had little difficulty in reducing his time of 22m 'sls considerably. Ambler would be wise not to take part in many more strenuous races on the road this season, as the continual pounding which this entails is not beneficial to a young runner. It would be pleasing to see him taking part in open track competition during the summer. Second to finish, 10. L. Havden, of the Technical Cluh, is another young runner who in the past two years has displayed promise above the average. He has run consistently at the Auckland Club's winter competitions on the Outer Domain this winter and this work has built him up considerably. More should bo heard of him in the future. N. Short, Calliope, who finished only three seconds behind Havden, ran a most determined race. Ho has performed consistently throughout the season and is a runner who can always be relied upon to run a solid race. T. Moffitt, L. Carleton and K. Taylor, three Lynndale runners, who finished fourth, fifth and sixth respectively, crossed the line within six seconds of each other, there being little to choose between the trio. The teams' event was won by Lynndale, from Calliope, Presbyterian and Technical.
