SURREY BEATEN
MARGIN OF 142 RUNS
EXCELLENCE OF BOWLING GOOD HELP FROM FIELD By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright LONDON. July 30 The return cricket match with Surrey, with whom New Zealand played a more than favourable draw in the opening match of the tour, resulted in victory to-day for the Dominion by 142 runs. When stumps were drawn yesterday the New Zealanders, after leading by 218 runs on the first innings, had 42 runs on the board without the loss of a wicket in their second innings (Vivian 16, Moloney 24). Page declared the innings closed today at 198 for five wickets. Left with 416 runs to make, to avert defeat, Surrev was dismissed for 274.
Bereft of bowlers'through the illness of Cowie and leg trouble in D mining's case, New Zealand delayed the declaration until lunch. Scoring briskly, Weir gave a fine display of clean hitting, including two huge sixes on to the pavilion roof and six fours. Surrey Collapses After Tea Gover was not particularly troublesome in either innings, but the pitch was enough to break the heart of any fast bowler. Still he may be recalled for the third test (at the Oval on August 14), but a big body of opinion favours Fames. Page, appearing in the unusual role of opening bowler, got a wicket with his first ball. After that Surrey scored rapidly, instructions to get runs or get out having been issued by the captain, E. R. T. Holmes. Gregory made a brilliant century, at a rate of one run a minute. Surrey collapsed after tea, before the slow bowling of Moloney, Gallichan and Vivian. Visitors' Success Creditable The New Zealand success was doubly creditable in view of the perfection of the pitch and the depletion of the attack. The bowlers were supported by excellent catching. With Cowie, Dunning and Roberts all on the casualty list, the New Zealanders are a battle-scarred legion for the second gamo against Glamorgan, commencing to-morrow.
