TASMAN SHIPS

SAILINGS DUPLICATED LINERS TO LEAVE TOGETHER AWATEA AND MONTEREY For the first time since they have heen in the service/ two of the fastest liners in the Pacific, the Union Steam Ship Company's Awatea and the Matson liner Monterey will steam together across the Tasinan Sea from Auckland to Sydney next month. By an unusual duplication of services, both vessels are scheduled to leave Auckland at five o'clock 011 the afternoon of August G. The two ships are fairly evenly matched in speed. Both average in the vicinity of 20 knots, carrying several knots in reserve. It is stated, however, that no question of a race across the Tasinan should arise. By leaving Auckland at 5 p.m. on August 6 the liners will arrive at Sydney on the morning of August f. Overhaul o! Awatea The Awatea has been undergoing an extensive overhaul and refit at Cockatoo Dockyard, Sydney, and she will resume in the intercolonial service on July HI, when she will leave Sydney for Auckland. Her return to the service will, in the first three months, result in four instances of duplication with Matson liners of sailings from Auckland for Sydney. The irregularity of transtasnian sailings and the duplication of services have been the subject of frequent comments. After the departures from Auckland for Sydney of the two rival ships a considerable gap will remain until the next transtasnian sailing. When the. Awatea and Monterey sail on August 6 there "will be no steamer leaving Auckland until the Wanganella is despatched on August 20, a break of a fortnight. Further Duplication On September <'i the Awatea and the Mariposa are both scheduled to leave Auckland for Sydney, the next sailing being that of the Wanganella on September 16. On October 1 the Awatea and Monterey will sail and a gap will result until the Wanganella leaves on October 15. The last occasion on which schedules of the Union and Matson Lines will clash will be on October 29, on which day the Awatea and Mariposa will sail together. The next sailing will be that of the Wanganella on November 11. The gaps between the sailings of the Wanganella and the departures of the Awatea and a Matson liner are not so pronounced, as the Niagara and Aorangi, on the Vancouver-Sydney service, will offer intermediate passages.

LINERS FROM DOMINION THREE ARRIVALS AT SYDNEY Three passenger liners from Xew Zealand reaching Sydney within a period of 75 minutes made an unusual occurrence yesterday morning. The Union Company's intercolonial steamer Maunganui, which left Auckland on Thursday night, arrived at 8.20 a.m., the Huddart-Parker motor-ship Wanganella, which left Wellington on the same night, arrived at 9.30 a.m., and the Matson liner Mariposa, which left Auckland on Friday evening, reached port five minutes later. A fourth arrival from the Dominion yesterday was the cargo steamer Karetu, from Lyttelton.
