SEVERE BURNS
SPARK IGNITES PETROL MOTOR ENGINEER SPLASHED OVERHAULING A CAR, Severe burns to the face, chest and arms were suffered by a motor engineer, Mr. William Henry Soutter, aged 31, single, of 50 Huia Roiid, Point Chevalier, when the petrol tank on a motor-car he was overhauling exploded yesterday afternoon. Mr. Soutter was attending to a car for Mr. J. R. Herring, a Morningside carrier, at the latter's home in 52 School Road. He located a short circuit in the wiring system of the electrio petrol gauge, close to the tank in the front of the vehicle, and was attempting to connect the broken wiring when a spark ignited the petrol. The tank exploded, and the burning liquid was splashed over Mr. Soutter.He suffered severe shock, and a St. John ambulance was summoned to convey him to the Auckland Hospital. He made good progress and at a late hour last night his condition was reported to be not serious.
Although the petrol tank on the car was badly damaged, the rest of thel vehicle escaped lightly. ,j.
