ATTEMPT TO OBTAIN MONEY " WEAKNESS WITH ACCUSED" "Trying to get money under false pretences seems to have been a great weakness with accused for many years," said Mr. C. 11. Orr Walker, S.M., in tho Polico Court yesterday, when Ronald James Reginald McDermott, motor mechanic, aged 23, appeared for sentence on charges of being a rogue and vagabond by imposing on George Robert Catley by means of a verbal false pretence with a view to obtaining money, aiul of obtaining 10s from Beatrice Catley by means of a similar false pretence. "Accused entered a shop in Symonds Street on July 1," said DeteotiveSergeant McHugh, "and told a good old story, but when he asked Mr. Catley for 10s the latter lftul some doubts about him. Mrs. Catley came into tho shop and recognised accused as the man about whom she had complained to the police some time previously for getting money from her. Accused has a number of previous convictions." The probation officer, Mr. J. Anderson, said accused was released from Borstal in March, and would remain on probation until next June: He had been well behaved and had worked well since his release.
