NEW CITY RATES

APPROVAL BY COUNCIL / CHANGED WATER CHARGE Rates for the current financial year were struck at a special meeting of the Auckland City Council yesterday. The new rate totals 4s 3|d in the pound, an increase of 3|d on the aggregate for last year. The total is made up of a general rate of Is lOd, a library rate of Id, a hospital and charitable aid rate of o£d, a drainage rate of 3d, and a special rate for the provision of interest, Is 7sd. An alteration in the incidence of the water rate was also approved. This provided for a uniform scale of 4J per cent for residential properties and § 1-8 per cent for non-residential properties and vacant sections, with a minimum of 10s and 5s respectively. Formerly there was a sliding scale representing the equivalent of 4 per cent on residential properties and 2 per cent on others. Later in the day the first instalment of rates demands for the year 1937-38 were issued from the City Treasury. This will mean that the 10 per cent penalty for default in respect of these rates jnill accrue before the end of January.
