WINTER WORK

UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF AUCKLAND CONFERENCE Prospects of providing work during the remainder of the winter for a large number of the unemployed and those on sustenance in Auckland are to be considered at a conference of Auckland and suburban local bodies, to be held in the Town Hall on Monday morning. The conference has been called at the request of the acting-Minister of Labour, the Hon. P. C. Webb, who will arrive from Wellington by the limited express on Monday morning. He will be accompanied by the Secretary for Labour, Mr. J. S. Hunter, and Mr. W. Bromley. About a week ago the Minister announced a plan for finding work for 7000 men throughout the Dominion, this to carry the unemployed through the next four months. The Minister asked for the co-operation of local bodies. Already plans have been made for 860 men 011 sustenance in Christchurch to be given full-time employment at standard rates of pay by local bodies. It is understood that the Auckland City Council will submit proposals to the Minister under which several hundreds of men will be provided with work covering some months. It _is possible that other local bodies taking part in the conference will be able to make suggestions for absorbing a further number of men. It is expected that the Minister will spend several days in Auckland and he will then visit other centres in the Auckland province. He will be in Hamilton on Thursday.

Friday Offering up to £4 a week per man as a subsidy from the Employment Promotion Fund toward placing in employment for four months 200 ablebodied men now on sustenance in the Manawatn district, the acting-Minister of Labour, the Hon. P. C. Webb, conferred with local body representatives from the city and surrounding areas to-day. The City Council undertook to place" the majority of that number, and others agreed to give full cooperation with the Minister.
