OBITUARY
ME. JAMES 11. BUCHANAN PIONEER MONUMENTAL MASON The death has occurred at the age of 94 years of -Mr. James Hogg Buchanan, whose father established the first stone and monumental business in the city, still being conducted by his descendants. Mr. Buchanan was born in Glasgow in 1843 and reached Auckland with his family in 1861 in the ship Garransque. On the death of his father in 1805, Mr. Buchanan, as the eldest sou, beeamo the head of the firm and, in conjunction with his brother-in-law, the late -Air. John Taylor, was associated in the construction of several public building* in the city, including St. Andrew's Church, the Supreme Court, the Auckland Hospital, the Public Library and the Union Bank. Several of the leading monumental masons in the city gained their early \ experience in the employ of Mr. Buchanan. He was married in the Grafton Road Methodist Church in 1873 to Miss Emma Burton, who died many years ago. He was one of the early members of the United Service Freemasons' Lodge, prior to the establishment of the New Zealand constitution. Mr. Buchanan, who took no part in public affairs, retired from business in 189;}. He is survived by one son and three daughters. There are 11 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. MRS. J. 0. BREWSTER The death has occurred of Mrs. Jane Catherine Brewster, of Pukekawa, aged 8!) vears. Mrs. Brewster came to New Zealand in 1885 in the Rimutaka, and after living at Titirangj and Ellerslie took up residence at Pukekawa .'39 years ago with her husband, the late Mr. C. S. Brewster, and their family. Mrs. Brewster was a member of the West Street Church of Christ and of the New Zealand Evangelistic and Publication Association for 48 years. She is survived by four sous, and four daughters. There are 18 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. MR. ROBERT J. PEAT [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] DARGAVILLK. Saturday The death has occurred of Mr. Robert Joseph Peat, who had been a resident of Dargavillo for nearly .30 years, having come to Dargavillo from the Waikato with his father, the late Mr. 11. B. Peat, who was stationmaster. Mr. Peat was a mcntber of the Dargavillo Borough Council from 1923 to 1925. but did not seek reelection. He was a foundation member of the Dargnville Town Band and later bandmaster. He is survived by his wife, two daughters and one son. MR. E. WADE [by TELEGRAPH OWN correspondent] DARGAYILLE, Saturday The death has occurred at Te Kopuru of Mr. Edmund Wade, a well-known resident of the district for many years. He was keenly interested in all branches of sport, including football and boxing. He is survived bv his wife, one son and one daughter. There are 10 grandchildren.
