CHURCH CONSECRATION
ST. COLUMBA'S CEREMONY SERVICE BY ARCHBISHOP The consecration of St. Columba's Church, Grey Lynn, was carried out last evening by Archbishop Averill before a crowded congregation. The ceremony, which is only rarely performed in the Church of England, was highly impressive in its dignity.
Before the service, the archbishop, who was attended by Archdeacon W. J. Simkin and the chancellor of the Diocese, Mr. C. J. Tunks, was met at the doors by church officials. The keys were handed over and the memorial from the congregation was read and delivered to the archbishop. A procession to the altar followed and then the archbishop consecrated the font and other appointments before the chancellor presented the deed of consecration. This was presented to the archbishop and signed by him in the sanctuary. At the conclusion of the consecration ceremony, the choir sang the anthem, "Hail, Gladdening Light," after which evensong was conducted by the vicar, the Rev. H. Squires. The sermon was given by Archbishop Averill.
