STRUCK BY LIGHTNING
BRITISH TRAMP VESSEL COMPASSES OUT OF ACTION (Received May 28, 8.53 p.m.) MICLBOURNE, May 28 Struck by lightning in. a fierce storm off the coast, the British tramp steamer Appledore put into Portland, a Victorian out-port, to-day for repairs. The Appledoie was en route to England in ballast from Sydney. The ship's compasses were rendered useless and an expert compass adjuster has been sent from Melbourne to Portland.
