ADDINGTON TROTS
POSTPONED FOII WEEK NEW SURFACE NOT READY POSSIBILITY OF ABANDONMENT [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] CIIRISTCHURCH, Friday The Canterbury Park Trotting Club's Winter Meeting, which was to have been held to-morrow, has been postponed until Saturday, .June 5, because the track is not considered to be in a fit condition for racing. As soon as the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club's Easter meeting was concluded, the grounds committee decided to recondition the track and to replace the soil on a large portion of the track. Thousands of loads of earth were deposited, and, while fine weather may have given the custodian, Mr. J. Highsted, a. reasonable opportunity to get the track in order, there has now arisen the question whether the soil purchased was suitable for the purpose. The wet weather lias made matters doubly difficult and the officials of the Canterbury Park Club are not prepared to risk the lives of horsemen and horses in racing 011 going to which they have not become accustomed. It is possible a further postponement will be made to June 12. Jf the track is not then in racing condition, it, is understood the meeting will be abandoned.
HASTINGS HORSES
CHANCES OF JOHN CHARLES GOOD GALLOP BY SIR NIGEL [by tklkgicarii—own connr.sroNnKNT] HASTINGS, Friday The following horses left this morning to take part in the Fox ton meeting to-morrow: —Iddo, John Charles, Contact, Royal Banquet, Red Rufus, Helios and Sir Nigel. The Hawke's Bay district appears to hold a very strong hand in the Pt/routawhao Hurdles with Iddo, lied Rufus, Contact and John Charles. Iddo ran a creditable second to Collision early in the month at Woodvillo and has since won at Hastings. He is a dashing fencer, with a liking for soft tracks. Contact has improved with recent racing, and in his schooling has been brilliant. .John Charles also has been giving every satisfaction. He is expected to run well in the Century Hurdles at W angaiuii next week, so that at Foxton he should have a good chance, especially as he runs on well. Ho may prove the best of the local quarette. Red Rufus is not yet a proficient jumper. Helios has won only one raco and that was at Foxton 12 months ago. He has been galloping well enough to justify the present trip. Royal Banquet, an acceptor for the W'hirokino Steeples, is fit, but his jumping over country has not been impressive, However, his galloping ability and fitness may turn the scale in his favour.
Since the Hawke's Bay Cup meeting Sir Nigel has come on fast. In his final gallop before his departure he recorded I.MO for seven furlongs. That should ensure strong support for him in the Kcbbell Memorial Handicap.
