FIFTY YEARS AGO
RUSSIAN PLOT IN TURKEY. Interference in the domestic affairs of other countries by powerful European nations was a feature of world events 50 years ago, as can be seen from the "following extract from the New Zealand Herald of May 28, 1887: "Considerable sensation has been caused in Turkey by the discovery of a plot to depose the Sultan and place his nephew on the throne. The conspiracy was widespread among officials of the State, but the authorities have succeeded in frustrating the conspirators' plot, which is attributed mainly to Russian influence. Several Russians who were active participators in the affair and a large number of Turkish officers have been arrested. Osman Pasha and a number of prominent sheikhs and palace favourites have been banished for complicity."
