MENTAL HOSPITAL

CORONATION STAFF BALL COLOURFUL DECORATIONS A successful Coronation ball took place in the Auckland Mental Hospital last night. The function, which was arranged by the medical superintendent, Dr. H. Buchanan, assisted by Dr. J. Macky, was attended by over 1300 guests, including members of the medical and nursing staff and their friends. Striking and artistic decorations had been carried out, the guests passing under an archway of multi-coloured lights into the main building, the corridors of which were hung with Empire flags, native grasses and palms, in the large ballroom pride of place was given to photographs or Their Majesties the King and Queen, surmounted by illuminated crowns and flanked on either side with heraldic shields. Gay streamers in red, white and bluo were arranged in a canopy effect over the dancers, while the walls were hung with festooned greenery and the pillars swathed with palms and scarlet and royal blue silk. The adjoinrooms, which were comfortably furnished and lit with glowing fires, were massed with greenery against which wore placed tall stands of golden chrysanthemums, bonfire salvias and vivid green and rose hydrangeas. The music was a feature of the evening, the guests being piped into the ballroom to the rousing strains of the bagpipes. . The guests were received by the matron, Miss M. Mayze, M.8.E., who was wearing a frock of black ring velvet relieved with gold. Among those present were: —Mrs. H. Buchanan, who was wearing a frock of black crepe threaded with gold; Mrs. D. M.
