BIRKENHEAD BOROUGH
ESTIMATES FOR THE YEAR PENNY RATE FOR DRAINAGE Estimates of the receipts and expenditure for the ensuing financial year were "adopted by the Birkenhead Borough Council last evening. The Mayor, Mr. 10. J. Osborne, presided. The total rate required over the whole borough is 9d in the pound on the unimproved value, the same as was struck in the past three years. In addition, a. rate of Id in the pound on the unimproved value within the special area is needed for the first time for interest and sinking fund on the loan for drainage, the installation of which is now in. progress. Apart from drainage, interest and fixed charges account for 5Jd, leaving 3id for general purposes. The principal items of expenditure include street maintenance, £4OOI, and Auckland Hospital levy, £987. The installation of the drainage system has so far absorbed £9501, the total contract price being £18,9:59. The engineer, Mr. R. P. Worley, reported that the tanks should be completed in a month. The outfall sewer was Hearing completion. Steady progress was being made with the reticulation and main sewer construction, and the standard of workmanship was being well maintained.
Messrs. A. Had field and A. E. Henley were re-elecited the borough representatives on the Birkenhead Fire Board, which notified that the levy 011 the council this year was £270. Mr. J. Priekett was reappointed the Birkenhead member of the North Shore Water Board.
