CONTROL OF TAXIS
MINISTER'S PLAN OPPOSED "It is simply another means of filching the board's revenue," said the chairman, Mr. H. E. McEijtee, at the Papakura Town Board meeting, when referring to the Minister of Transport's question whether the board would be agreeable to have all taxi services brought under the Transport Act. This would bring all taxi services outside the four main centres under the jurisdiction of the four District Transport Licensing Authorities. M r . McEntee said the proposed regulation would mean as far as Papakura was concerned that it would come under the Auckland District Licensing Authority, "There is a steady desire," said Air. McEntee, "to get all revenue from all sources to pay the army of inspectors on the roads today. Local bodies like ourselves have ]oiicr stretches of roads which don't come under the Main Highways Board, and these taxi licences help to maintain the side roads.'' The board decided to authorise its delegates at a conference of local bodies to oppose the Ministers proposals.
