TRADES' WASTE
DISCHARGE INTO HARBOUR COMPLAINTS AT OTAHUHU Suggestions that the discharge of trades' waste in the Manuk.au estuary should be more strictly supervised to reduce pollution of the foreshores were discussed by the Otahuhu Borough Council. When 'reports on other alleged nuisances were submitted, Mr. A."Murdoch said some attention should be given to the menace to public health arising from the discharge of trades waste in the estuary at .Westfield. It was felt that the waste was :uot always released at the appropriate time to get the full benefit of the tide. In the interests of public health he suggested that some action be taken. , ~ The Mayor, Mr. C. R. Petne, said the council had repeatedly dealt with this matter without success, it is a question of an adequate sewage system and the Health Department will not intervene until this is available, continued the Mayor. The metropolitan drainage scheme was the only solution and it was a huge problem. Otahuhu itself was not readv for that scheme. Mr. F. W. Grey said the nuisance was outside the borough, yet the residents had to suffer all its ill-effects. rJe urged that something be attempted to improve the position. "That could bo done if the works would abide •' resrulatioqs," said J. J. Graham. . The Mayor said the borough had no jurisdiction and it was futile to discuss the matter. Discussion then lapsed.
