WAIUKU TOWN BOARD
RETURNED SOLDIERS' GIFT APPRECIATION OF SYMPATHY [from our own correspondent] WAIUKU, Tuesday On behalf of the Waiuku Returned Soldiers' Association, Messrs. 0. Henry and A. Madden last evening presented the Waiuku Town Board with an illuminated certificate expressing the association's appreciation of the sympathy and help afforded to returned men by the public since 1916. The certifiate, which is appropriately framed, is to be hung in the board room. Arrangements were completed by the board for a Coronation fireworks display to-morrow night, children to be brought in for the occasion from the surrounding districts, as far away as Graham's Beach, 30 miles distant on the shores of the Manukau Harbour. The board decided to protest against the Government's proposal to transfer the issue of motor drivers' licences from local bodies to the Traffic Department. Members said they considered the present system convenient and satisfactory. The town clerk, Mr. W. .Sampson, said the board received £7O per annum in fees for issuing licences. To replace this an increase in the rates of l-16d in the pound would be required.
