AMERICAN AIR MAIL

SERVICE TO AUSTRALIA FIRST CONSIGNMENT ARRIVES The first air mail to arrive in Australia from America reached Darwin last Wednesday by a Qantas aeroplane, from Singapore. The mail bags travelled by the China Clipper to Hongkong, were transferred to an Imperial Airways aeroplane for Penang, whence they were taken to Singapore by air to connect with the Qantas service. Letters posted at San Francisco will be delivered in southern cities of .Australia 13 days later. Although the first air mail of a new service is generally heavy, owing to letters posted for philatelists, the incoming American mail on this occasion did not make any appreciable difference to tho usual weight of mail carried by tho Qantas machine. The first air mail from Australia to America left on April 23.
