ENTERTAINMENTS

PLAZA THEATRE Anna Leo appears in the title role of "Sally of the Regiment," which is enjoying a successful season at the Plaza Theatre.. This film is a thrilling story, of romance and drama in the lives of two young soldiers. John Mills and Wallace Ford appear in these roles. MAJESTIC THEATRE Romance, song and laughter are all to be found in abundance in "Pennies from Heaven," the current attraction at the Majestic Theatre. The principal players include Louis Armstrong and his famous swing band, and Madge Evans, who is responsible for some delightful singing, whistling and dancing. Bing Crosby and Edith Fellows also are prominently cast. CIVIC THEATRE George Arliss appears m a dual role in "His Lordship," the delightful comedy which is attracting large audiences to the Civic Theatre. The film is a Gauniont British production in which some line dramatic scenes and romance are introduced as well as a great deal of comedy. ' Romilly Lunge and Rene Ray head the supporting cast. REGENT THEATRE A .vivid film of one of the most brilliant periods in English history, "Fire over England," from the novel of A. E. W. Mason, is the current attraction at the Regent Theatre. A feature that should appeal to the student is the faithful manner iu which the customs and events of those days have been recorded. The part of Queen Elizabeth is taken by Flora Robson, others in the large cast being Raymond , Massey, Vivien Leigh, Laurence Olivier and Leslie Banks. Several shorter films complete *the programme. . • .

ROXY THEATRE

Two exceptionally. thrilling films are to have their final screenings at the Roxy Theatre to-day. The first is "We Who Are About to Die," which contains some very thrilling scenes of prison life. Fine dramatic acting is presented by the principal performers, Preston Foster, Ann Dvorak and John Beal. The secoud attraction is ■ the Warner Brothers' production, " Smart Blonde," in which Glenda Farrell appears in the title role. Barton MacLane and Winifred Shaw are also' in the cast.

COMING ATTRACTIONS

A fine double-feature programme is to be presented for the first time at the Roxy and Tivoli Theatres to-mor-row. The first attraction is the. film "Park Avenue Logger," in which George O'Brien is particularly well cast in the principal male role. There are some highly dramatic scenes in this production. The second film to be presented to-morrow will be "Black Legion," in which prominent roles are taken by Humphrey Bogart and Dick Foran. The supporting cast includes Erin Moore and Robert Barrat. This picture also includes some very fast acting.

STRAND THEATRE

A musical comedy with the world figure-skating champion, Sonja Henie, in the leading role, "Girl in a Million' is continuing its highly successful Auckland season at the Strand Theatre. Making her screen debut, Miss Henie gives a delightful performance. As the musical element is strong in this film great care has been taken, in the selection of the supporting cast. This includes: a number of well-known radio and screen artists, including the Ritz Brothers, Don A niOchc. Ned Sparks and Adolphe Menjou. Many popular new songs are also presented. A mostamusing comedy, "Back to Nature," showing the adventures of the Jones family, also is being screened.

EMBASSY THEATRE

Errol Flynn, the hero of "Captain Blood" and "The Charge of the Light Brigade,"'has his first modern role in "Green Light," which is now in the second week of its season at the Enibas*«: Theatre. He is ably supported by Margaret Lindsay, Anita Louise and Sir "Gedric Hardwicke. "The King's People," a review of the history of the British Empire during the past 40 vears, also is shown. The late John Drinkwater, George Bernard Shaw and several other notable figures appear.

TIVOLI THEATRE

A particularly fine programme is to bo presented to-night at the Tivoli Theatre, when guest night concessions will be available to patrons. In the first film, "Strange' Conspiracy," leading roles are filled in capable manner bv Paul Kelly and Edward "Arnold. Jean Muir and John Boles appear to advantage in "Orchids to You," the second attraction. The programme includes a comedy, "All for One," a novelty film, "Desert Derfions," and a travelogue, "Strange Lands."

NATIONAL THEATRE

Two fine full-length films, "Go "West, Young Man" and "The Big Broadcast of 1937," are included on the current programme at the National Theatre., Mae West has. a leading role in the former attraction, -while Jack Benny and Martha Have appear in. "The Big Broadcast of 1937," which is a Paramount production.

CRYSTAL, PALACE AND RIALTO

Now in lis ninth week of continuous screening in Auckland, "Three Smart Girls" is the current attraction at the Crystal Palace and Rial to Theatres. Deanna Durbin, a ck'.ld actress with amazing vocal powers, has the leading j-oie. "Don't Turn 'Em Loose" is the second attraction.

LONDON CINEMA

"The Ro.val Cavalcade," a very appropriate film for the Coronation period, is to be included on the programme to be presented to-day at the tondon Cinema. A further attraction is a thrilling western film, "West of the Pecos," in which Richard Dix gives a fine performance in a leading role.

TUDOR CINEMA

"Sylvia Scarlett," the film version of one of Compton MacKenzie's novels, will be the principal attraction at the Tudor Cinema to-night.

STATE THEATRE

Joan Crawford and Robert Taylor appear in prominent roles in "The Gorgeous Hussy," which is to continue its season at the State Theatre to-day. There is to be a special matinee tomorrow.

MAYFAIR THEATRE

"Sisters Under the Skin" and "Hooray for Love" will be the guest night attractions at the Mayfair Theatre to-night.

STATE THEATRE, ONEHUNGA

The principal film on the programme to he presented at the. State Theatre, Onehunga, to-night, is "Spendthrift."

BRITANNIA THEATRE

"The Return of Sophie Lang" is to bo presented with "Thank You, Jeeves" at the Britannia Theatre tonights

ST. JAMES* THEATRE The picture version of Shakespeare's play "Romeo and Juliet," with Norma Shearer and Leslie Howard in the title roles, will conclude its season at St. ; James' Theatre on ' Thursday. Other players taking part are Basil Rathbone, C." Aubrey Smith, Ralph Forbes and Edna Hay Oliver. Probably one of the most successful musical comedies ever staged, "Rose Marie," will be seen on the screen at St. James' Theatre on Friday. Since "Naughty Marietta" first brought delight to its audiemvs film-goers have been waiting for the news that Nelson Eddy and Jeanette Mac Donald woyld appear togeth.-r again in another musical film. The stage version of "Rose Marie," first produced in* New York in 1924, had phenomenal success. It was shown there for two years, opened in London in 1925 and had a two years", season there. In the film the narrow limits of a stage do not hamper the producer and practically the whole action takes place in the Sierra Nevada mountains, where beautiful lakes and vistas of pine trees provide unforgettable scenery. The producers of "Naughty Marietta," W. S. van Dyke and Hunt Stromberg, were responsible for the picture, which is from the studios of Metro-Goldwvn-Mayer. Replete with music, romance and magnificent settings, "Rose Marie" should rank as one of the best pictures of the year. ASTOR THEATRE Fine singing and thrilling drama _ is to be found in "Show Boat." which is to be screened to-night at the Aster Theatre. STATE THEATRE, DEVONPORT Guest night attractions at the State Theatre, Devonport, to-night, will include "The Case of the Howling Dog" and "Laddie." STAR CINEMA Guest night will be observed to-night at - the Star Cinema when the films "Silver Streak" and "The Passing of the Third Floor Back" will be the principal attractions.
