HARRIER RACING
AUCKLAND CENTRE'S EVENT COMBINED RACE AT BIRKENHEAD The official opening of the Auckland harrier racing season was held on Saturday, when the Auckland sub-centre conducted a combined run over a 4J miles course at Birkenhead. Approximately 150 runners took part, Mr. C. Orr-Wa!ker, S.M., patron of the Timaru Harrier Club, South Canterbury, being the starter.
The runners wero divided into four packs. J. I. B. Neil led the racing section, in which R. Crompton was first to finish. Chappel and A. G. Bradley also ran prominently in a strenuous contest.
' The fast pack was under the control of ' J. P. Dolan, chairman of the c«itre sub-corn- ; mittee. The runners set a steady pace and fine • form was shown by Anderson, Francis, Taylor, Hislop and Ambler. Tho intermediate runners constituted the 1 largest group, and were under tho leadership , of J. Mortimer. S. Wiltshire, J. U. McKenzie. and Dillner led the field throughout. A large number of slow pack competitors were led by ' Shorter, of the Calliope Club. W. H. Stephen- ■ son, Stacey, 'l'. T. Dean, Sharinan and Larman showed the best form. : The Calliope Club provided the afternoon . refreshments. WESLEY CLUB'S EVENT Members of the Wesley Harrier Club who did not take part in tho combined event at Birkenhead ran from the Trinity Collegiate Church. Results wero as follows: Intermediate Pack. —U. Walker, 1; J. Carter, 2; L. Mooro, 3. Fast pack: C. Moore, 1; R. J. Skyrme, 2; A. Graham, 3. EVENT AT PAPATOETOE Tho Papatoetoe Harrier Club held a 6'A miles practice run on Saturday, a large number of runners taking part. A 410 yds run-in resulted as follows:—N. Sly (18yds), 1; A. Littler (18yds), 2; R. French (4yds), 3.
