SPORT IN CANTERBURY

A record year for salmon fishing in the Rangitata .River is reported by the ranger to the. South Canterbury Acclimatisation Society, Mr. F. AY. Pellett. There were only 14 unfishable davs this year. Six hundred salmon were caught at the mouth of the river, Mr. Pellett said, and those that were caught up-stream he estimated at 300. "But that is a very conservative estimate," he added. ''lt is difficult to keep a tally of the fish that are caught up-stream in the Rangitata River." The heaviest fish caught weighed 331b., and the catch was made by Mr. E. Hoi- J land, Temuka. They ranged in weight from 131b. to 241b. An hour and a-quarter was required to land the largest fish.
