INCREASED STAKES PAKURANGA HUNT MEETING GOOD PRIZES FOR AUGUST The race committee of the I'aktiranga Hunt met yesterday and decided on the programme for its next totalizator meeting at Ellerslie in August. The stakes were increased by £650 from £I2OO last year, making a total of £IBSO. The programme is as follows: —Greenmount Steeplechase, of £200; Harris Memorial Hack and Hunters' Hurdles, of £150; Sylvia Park Handicap, of £150; Jellicoo Handicap, of £300; Paktiranga Hunt Cup, of £550; Auckland Hack Handicap, of £150; Ladies' Bracelet, of £150; and Admiralty Handicap (formerly Dunedin Handicap), of £2OO. The stakes for the Paktiranga Hunt Cup have been increased by £2OO and the Jellicoe Handicap by £IOO. All the other races have been raised £SO. Conditions were altered in the hurdle race, making it open to hack hurdlers and qualified hunters. The distance of the Jellicoo Handicap is to be one mile instead of Ik miles. The Pakuranga Hunt Cup Steeplechase is to bo for qualified hunters irrespective of a horse's winnings. Formerly, it was restricted to horses that had 'not won a race of any description of the value of more than £IOO (hunters' races excepted). Jhe stake of £550 will be allotted as follows: — First horse, £-'SOO and a trophy valued at £25; second, £125; third, £75; and fourth, £25. Mr. F. J. MeManemin was appointed hamlieapper, Mr. E. V. Sutherland judge, and Mr. G. L. Stead starter. NOTES FROM EVERYWHERE TRACK AND STABLE GOSSIP London will race at Pukekohe, and is doing well in his preparation at Huntly. Miss Vera, the dam of Vera Aero and Lornacre, has been sold, and will visit Autopav in the coming season. The Westport-owned gelding, Master Reynard, has arrived at Jlicearton. Ho has joined the stable of D. O'Connor, who will make an early start to educate the horse for hurdle racing. The two-year-old filly, Guinea Fowl, and the yearling filly by Beau Pere — Timid, both owned by Mr. G. U. Macdonald, are being sent homo from Riecarton by H. and A. Cutts for a spell. Pennyplain is in regular work at Tirau under the guidance of his owner, Mr. Sefton Banks. Pennyplain is a very safe conveyance, and will have his' first race this season in the Hack Steeplechase at Te Hapa, where he will be ridden by L. Dulieu. The successful Macquarie Stud, Wellington, New South Wales, the property of Mr. H. A. Taylor, is to be dispersed in June. The catalogue will include the three stallions Melfort. whose yearlings sold well at the Easter sales in Sydney, Rampion and Koomeeln.
Two interesting yearling colts have recently been handled by Mr. Sydney Smith,* of Ladbrooks. They are the property of Mrs. W. Mackenzie, .of Dunedin, and are to be sent this week to F. Shaw at Wingatui, to be broken in and put through their early education. One is a son of Nightniarch and Palantua, both New Zealand Cup winners, and the other is a brother to Palantua by Paladin from Mantua Palantua, who is also at Ladbrooks, has another colt running with her by Nightniarch.
