SWORDFISH ASHORE

BEACH ON WEST COAST [my tklegkaph OWN cohrkspondknt] G REYMOUTH, Thursday A large swordfish of the broadbill variety was discovered this morning on North Beach, near Cobdcn Tip, apparently washed up by the heavy seas of the last few days. The fish, which was found at the highwater mark, is 12ft. long and .'3ft. 6in. across the tail, with a girth of 41't. 9in. The sword measures 3ft. Gin. The appearance of a swordfish in these waters is surprising in view of the fact that their usual habitat is on the north-east coast and because of the season. Greymouth trawlers reported swordfish hear the coast two, years ago but this is the first time that one has been washed ashore hero. The fish weighs in the region of 6001b.
