TROUT FISHING
ROTORUA AND TAUPO RECENT ADVERSE WEATHER [by telegraph—own correspondent] ROTORUA, Thursday In his fortnightly report on trout fishing the conservator of fish and game, Mr. A. Kean, states that strong, cold, westerly winds made fishing very unpleasant and many favourite places were exposed to the elements. The Oliau Channel carried a good number of fish, but the outlet to Rotoiti did not fish well. It was found that the fish did not stop there, but ran into the reeds.
Fly fishing was very hard at Waitete and Awahou, and the only good catch reported was a limit taken bj r Mr. Annan at the former stream. Rotoehu fished well at times. Tarawera was subject to very rough conditions at times, but fished well, and specimens up to 9£lb. were landed. Rear-Admiral the Hon. E. R. Drummond and party landed 38 during three days' fishing. The average of this catch Avas 6Jlb., the heaviest being 9Jlb. Fishing in Rotoiti was difficult and the majority of the fish taken were young. They ranged between 31b. and 51b,
The Waikato River fished well in the vicinity of the Aratiatia Rapids and specimens up to 81b. were taken in the Wairakei stretch. A catch of eight rainbow taken below the Huka Falls averaged 51b., and included one of 7ilb. Reports from Taupo state that the weather was mostly wet and stormy and against fishing. During the few fine days good catches were made. Anglers dry fly fishing above the Huka 'Falls had fair sport. They did not have much success at the various points at the Tokaanu end of the lake. In the Tauranga-Taupo fish were plentiful but did not take well. Fishing at the mouths of the streams was difficult and it was found that, like the Waitahanui, the lish were running straight in. The Tongariro was not greatly affected by the rains.
