SUGAR CONTRETEMPS

DELEGATES AND AGREEMENT VERSION IN OWN LANGUAGES LONDON, May 5 As illustrating the strength of nationalism throughout Europe a contretemps has arisen in the Sugar Conference, and is holding up the agreement. It had been decided to publish a 40-page document in English and French. The Germans have now insisted on a German version, and the Russians immediately demanded one in Russian,

Mr. Norman Davis (America) rose to try to solve the difficulty, and Mr. R. G. Casey, Commonwealth Treasurer, humorously interjected: "I suppose you want one in American."

It was then suggested that Mr. Casey should require an aboriginal text. Mr. Ramsay Mac Donald is making strenuous efforts to overcome the deadlock. Mr. Casey does not desire to sign a foreign text, and the others feel similarly. Some delegations threatened to walk out unless the agreement was drawn up in their languages. The conference is expected to approve the convention to-morrow.
