PRICES AT SMITHFIELD CHILLED BEEF STRONGER WEAKNESS IN PORKERS The market for New Zealand lamb at Smithfield is steady with prices very firin, excepting heavy-weights, according to the weekly report of the New Zealand Meat Producers' Board. Consumption of lamb is good but warm weather is required. The market ior wethers and ewes is firm with prices unchanged. Owing to a shortage i>t spot stocks frozen beef is a shade firmer. Chilled beef is meeting with a good demand at better prices, owing to lower supplies. The market for New Zealand porker pigs is easier with trade slow. The baconer market is steady and unchanged. GRAIN AND PRODUCE THE CHRISTCHURCH MARKET FALLING-OFF IN DELIVERIES [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION'] CHRISTCHURCH, Friday The grain and produce markets have been very quiet this week, tho usual state immediately before tho Kaster holiday. Deliveries of most lines have fallen off and there is 110 great interest in any section. The demand for fowl wheat has been rather easier, but it is still large enough to absorb all that is offering. The price remains at 5s 3d f.o.b. Milling wheat is not coming in nearly as freely as it was last week, as farmers who have stacked are waiting for the increment which will go 011 to the price 011 April 1. A fair quantity of wheat threshed from stack has been seen and tho quality a great improvement 011 earlier deliveries. There lias been rather more interest in forward potatoes, but little business is passing. Quotations remain unchanged at £:i 011 trucks for AprilMay. Chaff is at present scarce and tho market is firm. There has been 110 change in the small seeds market. SUGAR CONFERENCE DISCUSSION OF PROGRAMME LONDON, March 24 At a meeting of representatives of the British Government and of the Dominions and Colonies, Mr. Ramsay MacDonald presided. Those present held a preliminary discussion of the programme for tho coining Sugar Conference. If was decided to refer certain difficulties to technical experts, who will report to Mr. MicDonald. EXPORT OF BACONERS SUGGESTION OF CONTROL [fuom OUlt own correspondent] HAMILTON, Thursday An indication that the Government might, if necessary, come to tho assistance of producers by controlling the export of baconers is given by the Prime Minister, Mr. Savage, in a communication received by tho Waikato Buttermilk Pig Producers' Association. Mr. Savage states that the Government has no intention of controlling tho-export of bnconers, but that 110 will make 110 statement that would prevent the Government from coming to tho assistance of producers if necessary. He has stated, he says, on several occasions that tho Government is not likely to add to its present responsibility without serious cause. JUDGING OF SHOW STOCK A party of between '2O and 30 farmers and members of the Putaruru Young Farmers' Club attended at the Horotiti Freezing Works to see tho bacon and porker pigs from the Putaruru Show judged on the hooks.
