AUSTRALIAN TURF

OUTSIDER TRIUMPHS MUTABLE'S CUP SUCCESS LLOYD STAKES TO PAMELUS (Received March 7, 5.5 p.m.) MELBOURNE, March 7 The Victoria Pacing Club's autumn meeting was concluded at Flemington yesterday in threatening weather before a fair attendance. The going was holding. Bcechwood made amends for his recent failure by scoring narrowly in the Leonard Stakes, in which Namakia was never dangerous.

Pamelus finished brilliantly to beat the pacemaker, Gold Rod, in the C. M. Lloyd Stakes. Ho has registered two wins and four seconds in his hist six starts and is a probable visitor to IJandwiek for the • Faster meeting. Young Jdea was a moderate third ami (Jay Blonde was outclassed. Bonnie Rollox lost his rider at the third fence in the Autumn Steeplechase, in which Seven llills scored comfortably. Flegance, JJhoy and Blackmill fell. The extreme outsider, Mutable, created a big surprise in the Australian Cup. He lias raced consistently this season, but the distance was considered beyond him. Mutable finished brilliantly to down I'ooley Bridge in the last few strides. Demotic just beat Hot. Shot for third, but Cuddle weakened at the end, as also did Amalia and Royal Messenger. W. J. Smart, ownertrainer of the winner, was formerly a well-known jockey. The time was only half a second outside the race record. The consistent Le Baron led all the way in the Gibson Carmichael Stakes, making his record four wins and a second in his last seven starts. Dick Devon finished strongly to beat Dunloe and the pacemaker. Country Party, in the Farewell Handicap. Results: — LEONARD STAKES, 'Of £700; 0 fur. BEECHWOOD, E. L. Baillieu and P. H. RICCARTON GALLOPS DOLLAR BILL BRILLIANT FINE EFFORT BY ROYAL CHIEF [IIY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] CHRISTCHURCH, Sunday Conditions were pleasant for training at Riccnrton on Saturday, when sovoral Trcnthnm candidates galloped well. The course proper was available, but most trainers preferred the plough, which provided excellent and fast footing. Emissary required 52 1-Ss to run half a mile along the back of the course proper.

Oit the plough, Paper Slipper and Wild Chase were companions over a mile, in which Paper Slippcl- showed to advantage, always {joint; a little more freely than his mate. Ho had a slight lead at the end of five furlongs in, 1.5, but he drew away a furlong from homo, only for Wild Chase to decrease the gap to a length at the post in 1.42 2-5. Wild Chase carried G. Humphries and Paper Slipper was ridden by A. C. IWessorvy. so there wore approximately 121b. in Fa per Slipper's favour. Easy Tasks for Two-year-olds

The two-year-olds. Haughty Winner, Lazybones, Nightdress and Mob Rule, separately ran six furlongs, but none was at top speed, Haughty Winner especially being under restraint. Royal Chief showed 'himself to bo particularly well by his gallop over six furlongs with Swordstick. IJoth carried very light weights. They reached the three furlongs in 3Gs, but Swordstick, who has done little fast galloping lately, could not go over the final furlong with Royal Chief, who recorded 1.14 4-5. The colt seems to be better now than at any other time since his return from Auckland. He ill ay be ridden at Trentham by A. Russell. Sunbeam, an acceptor for the Trial Plate at Trentham, took 1.17 I-. 1 ) for six furlongs, the last three in 38 2-ss. Ho was partnered by Miracle. Rousseau in Good Heart Dollar Bill ran a brilliant five furlongs in 1.1 4-5. He is engaged at Riverton as well as at Riccartou at Easter. Corne Abbas and Rousseau, under light weights, recorded 1.30 for seven furlongs, the last six in 1.16 2-5 and the last three in 38 2-ss. Rousseau finished strongly, but there was little between the pair. If the track at Trentham is easy, Rousseau should run prominently.
