MEAT IN LONDON
VALUES AT SMITHEIELD LAMB PRICES EASIER FROZEN BEEF STOCKS SHORT Colder weather in England is affecting the demand for New Zealand lamb 011 the Smithfield market, according to the weekly report of the New Zealand Meat Producers' Board. As a result with heavier supplies available prices arc easier. Wethers and ewes are meeting with a fair demand with prices steady. Supplies of chilled beef from all sources arc rather heavy. New Zealand fores are firm, but hindquarters are weaker. There is a shortage of si»ot stocks of frozen beef and values are steady.
Trade is quiet in New Zealand porker pigs with prices easier. Baconers are u shade firmer 011 better inquiry. Following are the latest quotations announced by the hoard, together with the values ruling at the close of the previous week: —
FROZEN PORK New Zealand— First, GO-SOlb. . . 7 6% First, 81-1001b. .. (j% 6% First, 101-I2olb. .. <»y t t>% First, 121-10011). .. s?i sy. *Xone offering. The weekly quotations are based on actual sales of wholesale quantities of carcases of mutton or lamb or of quarters of beef delivered to Smithfield market and/or London stores. To arrive at the equivalent ex ship values one farthing per pound should be deducted from the prices quoted above. Quotations given represent the average for the week, and are not selected linos, but for parcels fairly representative of the bulk of shipments now on offer. LAMB TRADE SLOW OVER-SUPPLY IN THE MARKET The Bank of New Zealand has received the following advice from its London office as at close of business last week: —Wethers: Tliere is a little better demand. Ewes: The market is firm. Lambs: Trade is slow. The market is over supplied, and prices are affected in consequence. Quotations: Wethers, light, 4jjd to s£d per lb.j heavy, 4d to 4Jd. Ewes, 3Jd to 4|d. Lambs, twos. 7Jd to 7£d; eights, 7d to 7£d; fours, 6gd to 6Jd; seconds, 6gd to 7d. SCHEDULE FOR EXPORT LAMB PRICES REDUCED id After a protracted season, owing to unfavourable weather, an easing is now taking place in the numbers of lambs offering for export, and the main season will soon commence to draw to a close. A reduction in the export schedule is being made, and this week's killings will be made at id per lb. less over all grades. The pig schedule remains unaltered, while yard prices still preclude any extensive operations in the beef trade by exporters. Schedule prices for lambs and pigs on hooks at freezing work's at Southdown for this week's killings arc:— Lambs. —Up to 361b., 82d; to 421b., BJd; over 421b., Sd; seconds, Sid; liclic seconds, 7id; shorn, Id less, all grades, with the usual deductions for seedy. Pigs.—Up to SOlb., 52(1; 811b. to 1001b., s'd; 1011b. to 1201b.. sd; 1211b. to 1601b.. sid; 1611b. to 1801b-., 4Jd; 1811b. to 2001b., 2Jd; over 2001b., ljd; choppers, exportable, 2d; porkers, unexportable, Id less; baconers, unexportable, over 1201b., $d less; choppers, unexportable. 2d per lb.
STEER FOR CHILLED BEEF COMPETITION FOR CUP The following are announced as the placings for the cup presented bv Wilson Meats, Limited, through the Franklin Agricultural and Pastoral Society, for the steer most suitable for the chilled beef trade when judged on the hooks at SouthdownE.
