WINTON MEETING

TO-DAY'S PROGRAMME ELEVEN IN CUP FIELD THE LIKELY FAVOURITES The annual meeting of the Winton Jockey Club will he held to-day, with win and place betting. Telegraphing last evening, the Hkii vi.d's correspondent stated that the weather was cold and showery and the outlook was not promising. The track had not been seriously affected by the rain and it would provide good going unless the weather was wet. Horses likely to be well supported are; — Novice Stakes. —Verdure, Golden Song, Tail tan Maid. Otapiri Trot.- —-Prince Charles, Sunny Drive —Bonnie Brydone bracket, Colierto. Winton Cup.—Ashawav. Golden Dart, Ocean Singer. Flying Handicap.—Silk Paper, Money- i less, All Humbug. Winton Steeplechase.—Faculties, Trisox, Blazon. Barkly Handicap.—Hodeur, Golden Vision. Red Treasure. Hokomii Time Trot. —Grand Meteor —Mountain Lad bracket, bmhark, j Eddio Tolan. j Tradesmen's Handicap.—Linguist, Half Note, Wall Street. Acceptances:—

EPSOM PRIZE-MONEY SUCCESS OF WOMEN OWNERS Only ono owner, Mr. F. Smith, won two races at the recent Auckland Trotting Club's meeting, Our Peggy netting £215, but Mr. W. T. Lowe, owner of Lucky Jack, headed the winning list with £270, for a first and a second, and B. Dyer, whose horse, Star Pronto, also gained a win and a second place, was next'with £250. I'risco Lady, first and third, secured £l7O for Messrs. J. E. and H. L. August. Women owners have been well represented at trotting meetings in the Auckland Province this season, and at the meeting just concluded seven won £475. Mrs. C. McGregor, owner of Gold Dredge, did best with £l7O, and Mrs. B. Young, with Frank Best, received £315. Miss A. Meyers, part-, owner of Royal Jewel, and Mrs. F. M. Vincent, owner of Great Sonoma, each won £55. Mute earned £3O for Mrs. J. E. Sweetapple, and Compass and Worthy Song gavo Mrs. R. M. Walker and Mrs. M.. Whitehead £25 each. NOTES FROM EVERYWHERE TRACK AND STABLE GOSSIP The eight yearlings bought by Mr. W. R. Kemball, at the January sales, also four young horses of his own breeding, are being shipped to Melbourne this week. The steeplechaser May am, while being schooled at invercnrgill on Tuesday morning, fell on landing over a brush fence and broke his leg, and he was at once destroyed. Blazon was his mate and apparently the pair came into collision on landing. A race at the Riccarton and Wingatui meetings, in the latter of which he carried a fair amount of support, should work a good deal of improvement in Epris, whose form so far this season has b£en most disappointing, in the light of his four Victories at the end of tho 1935-3(3 season. Tho victory of Earl Colossus in the Inaha Handicap at Ha war a had the effect of making him eligible for the Champion Hack Cup at Trontham next month. This is a race for hacks other than maidens at the time of entry. He has been placed in good hack races at Otaki, Tauheronikau, Trentham and New Plymouth this season, and his first success comes in time to be a load to further honours in the near future. One of the easiest wins at the Rotorua meeting was that of Jack Tar in tho Waimangu Stakes, in which ho defeated a moderate field pointless. Always speedy, Jack Tar appears to be becoming more solid and may not be long in scoring again. He will probably have his next race at To Aroha, where lie will be able to contest the novice events owing to tho fact that thoy aro for non-winners at tiriie of entry. Robant, who broko Barley Almond's winning sequence in the Abbotsford Handicap at Dunedin after unexpectedly taking the Trial Handicap on tho first day, is an aged rnnre by Robespierre from an Antagonist maro. Robant has a better record than would be imagined from the fact that she won her first race only last week. She began her career with ono race as a five-year-old and last season she gained five places in races up to nine furlongs.
