TAXI OVERCHARGES
WARNING TO DRIVERS cancelling' of licences A determination to ileal severely with proved cases of overcharging by taxidrivers was expressed by the Legal and By-laws Committee of the City Council at the meeting of the council last night. "Your committee desires to advise the council that from time to time cases of charging taxi fares in excess of those prescribed in the by-laws have come under the notice of the committee," it was reported. "Not only have complaints of overcharging been received in the case of fares charged by meter, but complaints have also been received that fares have been charged by time when no request to that effect has been made by the hirer of the taxicab, oontrary to the requirements of the by-laws. Instances have also come under the notice of the committee where taxis plying for hire with meters have not had the 'meters connected. "Your committee, in reporting the foregoing for the council's information, desires to state that it proposes in future cases, where the provisions of tho by-laws in regard to fares are proved to its satisfaction to have been contravened, to recommend the council to cancel the licence of the taxidriver concerned." A specific complaint of an overcharge, together with a statement by the taxidriver concerned, was submitted by the superintendent of traffic and was referred to the committee.
