NEW RESERVOIR

SITE AT NEWTON PRELIMINARY WORK PLANNED Preliminary arrangements for replacing the old reservoir at the corner of Karangahape Road and Ponsonby Road with a new reservoir of 3,000,000 gallons capacity were made by the City Council last night. The waterworks engineer, Mr. A.D. Mead, reported that the design for the new reservoir was completed. There would be two sections, each with a capacity of 1,500,000 gallons, and one section could be built independently before the old reservoir was discarded. It was impossible to ' excavate the whole site without endangering the stability of the old reservoir. It was intended to use the earth excavations from the site for the filling required on the Nelson Street extension and as a result the work on the reservoir could not be started until the area was availabl& for the street work. In the meantime prices could be obtained and .an order placed for the 140 tons of reinforcing steel for the first section of the new reservoir. The report was adopted.
