FIFTY YEARS AGO
VOLCANO ACTIVE ON HAWAII The following account of the outbreak of Mauna Loa volcano, in Hawaii fifty - years ago is taken from the New Zealand Herald of February 8, 1887: "By the arrival of the steamer Kinau, from Hilo and way ports,, news is to hand about the volcano. The details are meagre, but sufficient has been received to indicate that Mauna Loa is again active and the accounts seem to agree that it is the summit crater of Mokuweoweo which is the centre of greatest force at present, and that the crater of Kilauea is also in an unusual state of commotion. The first indications of any disturbance were observed at Hilo at 4.40 in the afternoon of the 16th. Again the same evening at twenty minutes past eight the glare of light from flow was plainly visible until 11 p.m. "The flow appeared to be on the south elope, well up the mountain, and was making toward the sea in the direction of Kohuka, Kau. There have been a great many earthquakes at Hilo lately, no fewer than seven distinct shocks being felt there on Monday, January 17. The shock of Monday night, occurring at a quarter to twelve, was particularly heavy."
