SPANISH REBELS
ADVANCES CHECKED
FRANCO'S IDEAS OF WAR GERMANS CONTEMPTUOUS By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received February 2, 5.50 p.m.) LONDON, Feb. 1 The Spanish Government's forces are still holding out against the rebels under General Franco, states a message from Madrid. A resumption of the rebels' attack on Malaga seems at present to have been averted.
Seventy-five per cent of the casualties at Malaga, as at Madrid, are women and children. The vaunted prowess of the Moors, which formerly bulked large in the war messages, is now almost unmcntioned.
German soldiers do not conceal their contempt for General Franco's "amateurish" ideas of warfare, while General Franco is disinclined to employ Germans because he is aware that their operations would eclipse anything of which his troops are capable. Confirmation is lacking of the Daily Heraid's story of an armed clash between German and Spanish officers at Seville, hut the prevalence of international jealousy would be sufficient to account for such a clash.
