EXPLOSION OF SODIUM
RIDER SEVERELY BURNED BAG OF CHEMICAL ON SADDLE [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] "WHAKATANE, Tuesday As the result of some sodium chlorate exploding, Lionel Freeman, aged 21, married, of Matata, suffered severe burns on his hands and face. Mr. Freeman had been employed for some weeks on ragwort eradication on Mr. Patterson's estate, near Matata. Last evening lie was returning on horseback with a man named Peterson and carrying a few pounds of sodium wrapped in a sugar bag on the front of his saddle. The sodium suddenly burst into flame and the explosion caused the horse to bolt. Mr. Freeman was thrown into some fern at the roadside, clear of the burning bag and its contents, but not before he had been badly burned. His coat also caught fire, b"t was smothered by his fall.
Mr. Peterson rode for assistance while the injured man walked a mile and a-half to the nearest house. He was taken in a truck to the Whakatane Hospital. His condition to-day was de.scribed as satisfactory.
