SLOOP LEITH'S CRUISE
UNDER ADMIRALTY CONTROL MINISTER UNABLE TO COMMENT [by telegraph —owx correspondent] WELLINGTON, Tuesday The report that H.M. sloop is now in the southern Pacific on a special mission was referred to the Minister of Defence, the Hon. F. Jones, to-day. He declined to comment on the unofficial suggestion that the vessel was visiting various Pacific Islands, which, though isolated, may become of real value when the Pacific aviation routes become a reality.
"H.M.S. Leith is under the control of the Admiralty," said the Minister, "and I am consequently not in a position to make any comment on the suggestions published regarding her cruise."
It was reported yesterday that when the Leith sailed from Suva on January 25 under, it was stated, sealed orders, she took with her a wireless operator, Mr. Oscar Barrack, of the Fiji Government service, and six months' supplies for him.
