REV. F. HASTINGS

VETERAN MINISTER DEAD CYCLED IN MANY COUNTRIES (Received January 17, 7.5 p.m.) LONDON, Jan. 17 The death has occurred of the Rev. Frederick Hastings, the oldest minister of the Congregational Church, at the age of 98. He had cycled 200,000 miles in all parts of the world, and once said he had had a wonderful life, having seen the wonders of Europe, Australia and America by means of his bicycle

The Bev. F. Hastings was born at Thome, Yorkshire, and was educated at Hackney Congregational College. His father, a. merchant and shipowner, took him into his business, but after a few years he gave up commerce for the Church. His first charge was at Woodbridge, Suffolk. Thence he went to Canada and later he was appointed to Tolmers Square Church, St. Paneras, which he made one of the most famous Nonconformist churches in North London.

After five years in Australia Mr. Hastings returned to England. In 191213 he was chairman of the London Congregational Union and for several years a member of the London County Council.

Throughout Mr. Hastings' long career he travelled wherever possible on his bicycle. It was not until he was nearly 96 that, he stopped cycling, giving as his reason the increasing danger of motor traffic.
