WOODVILLE ITEMS

LATEST TRAINING COURTCRAFT DISPLAYS SPEED MAINE PERFORMS USEFULLY [FROM ont OWN COItRKST'ONOKNT] WOODVILLE, Saturday Woodville horses with engagements at Trcnthain were given fairly strenuous work on Thursday with the result that to-day's programme was not quite so serious. However, there was plenty of fast work, although most ol the horses were restricted to short sprints, the majority of which were over three furlongs. After heavy rain on Friday night the going was good but a little slow. The course proper, with the trestles over -101't. out, was available, and the gallopers were not going in very far. Jt was intended that the two-year-olds should gallop next the rails, but the lain the previous night and the fact that the Woodville autumn meeting is not much more than a month away settled that. Among the spectators were Mr. and Mrs. W. 11. Gaisford, who were present to see the Limond-Homage colt, Courtcraft, and Mandamus gallop. F. \Y. Davis, who is taking six horses to Wellington, was first- to work, and Karl, Haut Monde, Geira, Francis Drake, Aiwai and Relative, were sprinted. They are all in good nick, and one or two of them should be capable of more than paying their way. Mandamus is not making the trip. Francis Drake (M. Gilmore) jogged round to the lire and then increased to three-quarter pace to the bottom of the straight, where ho quickened to cut out the last three in 10 3-5. He was going very well at the finish. Francis Drake was also worked on I hursday, but he is 1 a7.y unless up against some opposition. Aiwai Shows Dash Karl (N. Cavaney) was given a similar task to that of Francis Drake, and, going faster when lie passed the three, lie broke 40s. Karl was worked over six furlongs with Haut Monde on Thursday and there was nothing between them at the finish, although they were not out after time. Haut Monde (Cavaney) sprinted sixfurlongs in 1.21, moving attractively throughout. He looks particularly well. Aiwai (Cavaney) dashed over three furlongs nicely in Js9s. Geira (Gilmore) and Relative (Cavaney) were companions over half-a-mile in 525. Relative was a couple of lengths ahead and Geira made no effort to overtake her. Geira, Relative and Aiwai were companions over five furlongs on Thursday, finishing together after an attractive work out. Courtcraft (Gilmore) and Mandamus (P. Rayner) sprinted three furlongs in 38 3-ss. Courtcraft, who lias been galloped only a couple of times, and who is a beautiful mover, wont pleasingly. Courtcraft's first outing, under silk will probably be at Woodville next month. Blue Tiger (W. Stylos) was given a couple of rounds at a bit short of threequarter pace. Blue Tiger was schooled on Thursday and appears to be in good fettle for Ashhurst. Nelumbo and Only One C. McGovern will ride Midacge in the hurdles at Ashhurst and ho will be on Otaki in the High-weight Handicap on tho first day at Trentham. A three-year-old gelding named Cenotaph, by Colossus—Marceline, owned by Mr. R. G. Smith, is in work at Woodville. He has not been in long and is a half-brother to the speedy Princess Betty.

Full Throttle (T. Traeev) galloped a mile in 1.49 3-5. Full Throttle will he ridden by R. Marsh at Ashhurst. Marsh will have the ride on Son and Heir at Wellington. S. Anderson was in Woodville to ride Unly One in a five furlongs trial with Nelumbo, the half-sister to Tho Khedive. H. Gilmer being on Nelumbo. Only One got tho better "of the start, but Nelumbo was in front at the home turn and she finished very strongly to complete tho distance in 1.6. Nelumbo looks to be a good sort. Maine, with the very small son ol .T. M. Cameron in the saddle, was given a work out over a milo and a-cpiartcr. Pladie (Gilmer) went with her for the first mile and Maine was about half a length to the good all the way. She completed the last mile in 1.54 time that she could have bettered. Maine went a mile on Thursday in 1.49. ,\o rider has been announced for Maine in the Wellington Cup, but J. Forsyth, who rode her to victory in the lailiaiuentary Handicap, will probably be her pilot. Otaki (B. Kowhai), who looks none the worse for recent racing, was sprinted down tho straight. K. Davis and J. M. Cameron are exported to leave for J.renthani on Monday.

WANGANUI TRAINING

SPIRAL AND ENTAIL GALLOP

[it y ti: i. i.e.nAi'ii —own colt lt kspon » knt] WANGANUI, Sunday

Tlio small team of Wanganui horses which will bo sent to Trcntham on Monday for the Wellington Racing Club's Summer Meeting got through satisfactory final gallops yesterday morning under blustery weather conditions. Rain on Friday night had made the tracks slightly holding and there is an almost embarrassing growth of grass, but the course proper, with the pegs out about 15ft., was in really good order. Spiral (P. Latham) finished two lengths in front of Kntail at the end of six furlongs in 1.17, the first four in a tick over 50s. Spiral, who will be ridden in the Cup on Wednesday by K. Peck, appears to have gone on the right way since winning the Manawatu Cup, recording two placed performances at Marton following that success. Kntail will race at Wangnnui next week. Icing, who is to contest the Fit/herhert Handicap on Wednesday, was associated with Scarf Dance in a spin over two furlongs in 2-1 3-ss. Peek, who will pilot the Lilrfond filly at Trcntham. appears to understand her well. Scarf Dance will be raced at the Wanganui meeting. Airing was worked at a good threoquartei" while Sanhedrim _ was not bustled over four furlongs in 51 l-fjs. Airing is engaged in the Apprentices' Plate on Wednesday and the Douro Cup on Friday. Sanhedrim is down to contest, the Ruapehu Handicap, Mr. F. Bristol's pair aro in good shape. Two Ash hurst candidates, Reipar and Parakino, were sent along over six furlongs, but wore not fully extended to register 1.20. It is some time since Reipar raced, but he appears to have got over tlie trouble which brought about his temporary retirement. The horses will be ridden at Ashhurst by, Johnston's apprentice, S. Edwards, who is a promising light-weight.
