YACHT DRIFTS ASHORE

MISHAP AT TAKAPUNA STRENUOUS EFFORTS OF CREW After breaking from her moorings off Takapuna Beach in the strong easterly wind yesterday the 26ft. mullet-boat Lexia came ashore half-way along the beach and was saved from serious damage only by the exertions of her crew, who laboured from four o'clock until well after dark to take her up the beach out of reach of the waves.

A two-ton motor-lorry was requisitioned and a wire ;rope was made fast to the rear of the lorry and to the samson-post in the bow of the yacht. Iron plates were laid down on the sand for the tyres to grip. and. with members of the yacht's crew lending a hand, the boat was brought gradually up the beach as the tide came in. Special care was necessary when the tide was full just before nine o'clock lest the boat be buffeted against the concrete retaining walls fronting the beach residences. The yacht appeared to have escaped with a buffeting from the fairly heavy sea which, urged by the strong wind, was coming directly in to the beach. Because of this combination of wind and sea it was found impossible to sail out of Takapuna into a more sheltered anchorage.
