SOME SMART TIMES ARGENTIC AND VINTAGE GOOD EFFORT BY MANETHO [BY TELKfiRAPJT —OWN CORRKSI'ONDKNt] rriRISTCHOnciI, Thursday Ideal conditions favoured training at Riccarton to-day, the outside of tlie trial grass providing excellent going and it was used for all the work, with the exception of one gallop. This was recorded on the outside of the course proper by Vintage (L. J. Ellis) and Argentic (A. Messervy), who covered a mile in ] .4.'*, the second half in 52 3-ss. They kept together throughout, although Argentic appeared to ho doing the hotter work in the concluding stages. Argentic is to he ridden in the Wellington Cup by A. Jv Ellis, who will also have the mount on Concertpitch in the Telegraph Handicap.

A rider for Vintage on Wednesday has yet to he arranged. He looks very well and has been putting plenty of heart into his work. Although he may get some stake money at Trentham, it is doubtful if he will he capable of winning tho Wellington Cup. On the trial grass, Paper Slipper reeled off half a mile with Wild Chase in 18 3-ss, the pair finishing abreast. Their stableniate Thermidor later equalled this time, while the two-year-olds Mulatto and Haughty Winner recorded 40s. Bun Fight and Day Dress Bun Eight, and Day Dress went six furlongs impressively in 1.16 2-5. The latter should earn further distinction in the Apprentices' Plate at Trentham. Cor no Abbas ran six furlongs in 1.18 J-5, sprinting home tho last three in 36 2-ss. She was taken out of the Apprentices' Plato on the first day at Trentham, but will go up with Custos for the two concluding days. Custos finished about three lengths in front of Uoval Chief at the end of five furlongs in 1.3, tho last three in 37b. Garonne and Yale ran half a milo along the back in *l9 2-os. Both shaped well. Greek Gold covered five furlongs in 1.3. Dollar Bill was restricted to strong work over the same journey. Invoice covered half a milo in <l9 l-ss. He is not in at Trentham on Wednesday, but was nominated for the two concluding days. Great Star was kept in restraint throughout a mile and aquarter in 2.16, the last half-mile in 51 4-ss. He was ridden by H. Hibberd, who will have the mount on him in the Wellington Cup. Manetho gave Land Paid a break of two lengths commencing a six furlongs gallop, but was within a length of him at the post. Land Raid's time was 1.15 and Manctho's 1.14 2-5, easily the host of the morning over the distance. Land Raid will be an interesting contestant in the Anniversary Handicap on the first day at Trentham. Manetho is to make the trip without Epic, who did not gallop satisfactorily earlier in tho week. Convivial's Task Convivial strode over seven furlongs in 1.33. She should pay her way at Trentham. Cape Gabo and Recollection were companions over six furlongs in 1.18, with the former going the better at the finish. Tunnellcr and Polvdora were practically abreast throughout six furlongs in'l.lß 1-5. Tnnneller may have to be reckoned with in the Wellington Cup provided a suitable rider can be secured for him.

Knockfin was let off with half a mile in 52 l-os. Orange Bud covered the same ground in 50s. Roaming and Lofty will not be taken to Trentham. Fair Weather has rejoined F. Christmas' stable.

In addition to riding Flood Tide in the Wellington Cup, L. J. Ellis will liave the mounts on Royal Dance, Gustos and Top Row in their engagements on the first day. G. Humphreys will ride the Chokebore representatives Paper Slipper, Haughty Winner, Thermidor and Bun Fight. H. R. Davis has Chidden and Sovereign Lady in advanced order and hoth are to reappear at the mid-summer meeting at Riccarton next month.

lIAWERA TRACK WORK FIVE HORSES FOR TRENTHAM [ill - TKLKCRArH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] HAWERA, Thursday Conditions were good for fast work on the Hawera tracks this morning. The plough was in excellent order and the course proper was open for two-year-olds. On the plough, Notiuin, who is booked for the Ashhurst meeting, covered a mile, the last five furlongs in 1.7, Kia Tere doing a similar task. Student Prince worked nicely, recording 50 l-5s for half a mile. He will probably start next at tho Taranaki meeting. Autumn Leaf and Gold Band finished together at the end of half a mile in 50 2-ss. The former has improved with recent racing. International ran the last six furlongs of a round in 1.25. The Captain Bunsb.y gelding should not remain long in the maiden ranks. Wotan covered the last half mile of a round of strong pace work in 545. He will be in fine shapo for his return trip to Australia. Naughty Marietta accompanied Master Limond for the first half-milo of a mile gallop, then the latter was picked up by King Pluto, to traverse the mile in 1.4J 3-5, Master Limond should shape well at Wellington with a strong rider. Friesland (W. Pino) was under a strong pull to keep with Lowenberg ([,. Monkley) over five furlongs in 1.5 2-5. Both are in splendid fettK Gay Step sprinted three furlongs in 37 4-ss. Advance Plane, with a light-weight, registered J. 4 for five furlongs. He is on the improve. Kia Ora sprinted two furlongs in 24 4-ss. Corowa, with a good pull in the weights, shaded Ynlroy over five furlongs in 1.4. Among the young horses, Little Ron in shaded Settlement over three furlongs in 38 l-ss. Both are progressing. Pantoon finished slightly ahead of Narrator and Vadanoe over a similar distance in 38 2-ss. Lick cm n and Fairy Dale finished on terms over half a mile in 51 2-ss. This was a good effort by Lickem, as Fairy Dale lias had the benefit of a couple of races. J, Fryer is handling a nice-looking colt by Captain Bunsbv from Vivo, and so a full-brother to International. Hawera stables will he represented at Trentham b,v, Soloist, Master I-imond, Fairy Dale, Lowenberg and Friesland. All have come through a solid preparation.

TASK FOR INDIANAPOLIS MILE GRASS TRACK RECORD Provided he suffers no ill-effects from his racing at Forbury Park, Indianapolis is to appear at Hutt Park next month, when he will probably attack the mile grass track record of 2.4 L 5, held jointly by Impromptu, who made the time at Claudelands two seasons ago, and Happy Voyage, who made his time at New Brighton in 1923. Indianapolis is under constant treatment lo his feet. He looks well and his friends declare he will make a new mile record without much trouble.
